Electrostatic precipitators on a chemical production facility

We were asked to assess the condition of two detarrer electrostatic precipitators on a chemical production facility in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the view to return the units to service.

The detarrers had been installed about 15 years prior to our visit but had been out of service for several years. Owing to its reduced time in actual service, the detarrers were generally found to be in remarkably good condition. The main issue was original insulator housing heating.

This system utilised steam energy that was readily available across the site. Unfortunately, this equipment was badly corroded and totally inoperable. Refurbishing the steam heating was considered not to be feasible and jeopardised the possibility of returning the detarrers to service.

We assisted our client by providing them with an option for a new heating system, that was far less costly than replacing the steam heating equipment. The new system was less complex in design, with fewer components, but offered several control improvements.
